Wahida shares message of solidarity on World Refugee Day
More than 150 people gathered at New Zealand Parliament for World Refugee Day 2025 to honour the courage and contributions of former refugees — and reflect on how Aotearoa can become a more inclusive place for all.
Among the speakers was Wahida Zahedi, ŌCHT’s Settling In Coordinator, who shared her perspective as someone with lived experience of resettlement and decades of community advocacy.
Wahida came to New Zealand from Afghanistan as a teenager and understands the challenges of starting over — and the importance of having people walk alongside you in those early years.
In her remarks, she spoke about how building relationships alongside services can ensure people feel genuinely supported as they rebuild their lives.
Attendees included community leaders, government and non-government agencies, and representatives from the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
The event was hosted by the New Zealand Red Cross and Associate Minister of Immigration Hon Casey Costello.
The day encouraged reflection on the power of social connection, cultural understanding, and practical pathways to independence — ideas that feature strongly in Wahida’s work with tenants and community groups across ŌCHT neighbourhoods.
We’re proud to have Wahida on our team — and proud to support her work advocating for people who call Aotearoa home.
