Applying for a home FAQs

How do I apply for an OCHT home?

OCHT accepts new tenants from the Ministry of Social Development’s Social Housing Register. We don’t have many vacancies, so this helps us allocate them to those most in need.

Who is eligible to rent OCHT homes?

People who are eligible to be on the MSD Social Housing Register are eligible to rent OCHT homes.

How do I get on the MSD social housing register?

You’ll find out when you apply to be on the Ministry of Social Development’s Social Housing Register. Call 0800 559 009 or, if you’re a senior citizen, call 0800 552 002. You can find out more information on the MSD website.

I am on the MSD Social Housing Register, now what?

Being on the MSD public housing register means that your application is available to other housing providers who may be able to help you. If we find a property that may suit your needs, we will get in touch to talk in more detail.

Where are OCHT homes?

We have homes across most parts of Christchurch, as far north as Belfast and as far south as Templeton. We also have some in Lyttelton and Akaroa.

What type of housing does OCHT provide?

Most are one bedroom units, and most of our households are single people or couples. We have a small number of units bigger than one bedroom. Most of our homes are in housing complexes rather than standalone.

How long does it take to get a OCHT home?

It’s hard to say, because there are so many variables. We have few vacancies and low tenant turnover, and there’s a lot of need for our homes. When we have a vacancy, we look for applicants from the MSD’s Social Housing Register. So, you need to be on the register to be considered.

How much rent would I pay?

Applicants from the MSD Social Housing Register pay based on an Income Related Rent. MSD tells OCHT what rent to charge you. The rent is linked to income and the number of people in your household.

I need accommodation in a hurry – can you help?

We don’t provide emergency accommodation. For immediate assistance, please contact Work and Income on 0800 559 009.

Can I keep a pet?

Our properties aren’t suitable for dogs. In some cases, we can accommodate registered disability assist dogs. We may allow one cat per household.
