The amazing lifestyle, scenery and easy living in New Zealand convinced Tenancy Operations Manager Martin Pearce that a shift from Britain to NZ was a great decision. Martin and his partner left Southampton on England’s South Coast headed for Christchurch just over two years ago and they haven’t looked back.
“In the UK I worked for an organisation with responsibility for managing 55,000 homes. Because of the organisation’s size, we only met with tenants when they raised an issue. In my role at Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust we are lucky to have enough time and space to build much better relationships with tenants and see tenants on a more regular basis.
“In Southampton, I also had to commute for hours to get to work and home and the crowds of people meant there was very little sense of space and place. In comparison, Christchurch is an easy place to live and work with everything within easy reach. I enjoy running and cycling so the kiwi environment gives me plenty of opportunity to get outside and pursue fitness goals. Perhaps the only thing I miss about the UK is friends and family”.
“My partner and I were in Christchurch on holiday visiting relatives for Christmas a few years ago and I saw the job advertised and thought it would be perfect. I was lucky enough to be appointed”.
In his role as Tenancy Operations Manager with the Trust, Martin manages a team of twelve dedicated Tenancy Managers. A typical day is varied and can involve letting homes to new tenants, resolving tenants concerns and working with other agencies and services to ensure tenants health and wellbeing.
“It can be challenging at times but very rewarding when we see tenants achieving positive outcomes”.
Martin also says a highlight for him is the excellent committed team of Tenancy Managers.
“Every member of the team has the wellbeing of our tenants and their families at heart and that’s great”.
