Become a trustee at ŌCHT

We have a place for someone who’ll help our strong board continue to provide visionary strategic leadership and exceptional governance.

The Ōtautahi Community Housing Trust (ŌCHT) board has a vacancy for an independent trustee. Our independent trustees are with us for three year terms, to a maximum nine years, allowing for a planned cycle of trustee renewal. That’s why this rare opportunity is available now.

Here’s your chance to join an innovative leading community housing provider.

Share your proven commercial governance experience
Strong social justice values are a must
Christchurch based; 3-year term

About the role

Our new trustee will join a board of four independent trustees and three trustees appointed by the Christchurch City Council. Our trustees attend 10 meetings a year with opportunities for membership of the Audit and Risk Committee. Board members are remunerated in line with Institute of Directors not-for-profit fees.

About you

You’ll have credible commercial governance and leadership experience with strong social justice values. The Trust is open to a range of governance experience such as in the corporate, health, community, investment or property sectors.

Your experience governing innovation and sustainable fiscal growth will be well utilised as ŌCHT’s Five Year Plan includes building 100 energy efficient homes a  year to meet the pressing need for housing in Christchurch.

Your specific skills and attributes will include strong financial literacy, a commitment to Te Tiriti O Waitangi, and the ability to challenge and bring independent thought as you work collaboratively with long standing trustee colleagues in an engaging and vibrant way. Governance experience in the residential housing and/or large scale property development would be valuable but is not essential. Being local to Greater Christchurch is essential.

About the Trust

ŌCHT is a charitable trust and, with 2500 properties, is the second largest community housing provider in New Zealand.

ŌCHT was established in 2016 and signed a Deed of Lease with the Christchurch City Council in the same year. This lease gives ŌCHT rights to lease the Council’s portfolio, renewing first at 5 years (2021) and subsequently at 10 years with three further rights of renewal.

Over five years ŌCHT has doubled in size and has grown its equity position from $0 to $60 million. ŌCHT holds a property portfolio of $120 million and has built 230 quality community homes for Christchurch.

Please provide your CV including your qualifications and experience, and a covering letter outlining the contribution you believe you could make to ŌCHT.
Please send your application to Hamish Ott, Recruitment Facilitator to or call him on 0274 321 172.
